History
Since prehistory, caves of “Trous Légers” were occupied. In the gallic period, the inhabitants were located near Charmois forest : hazelnut trees and walnut trees gave their name to Nuits.
In Gallo-Roman times, a first city was erected in the south on a place named “Les Bolards”.
In 14 th century, walls were built around two quarters (Nuits-Amont and Nuits-Aval) which form actual centre.
In 1892, Nuits became Nuits Saint Georges, thanks to the name of the oldest cru dating from 1000. Since then, the reputation of wines of Côte and Hautes Côte de Nuits grows, even to the moon. In 1971, Appollo XV mission put a label on the moon in memory of Jules Verne and Felix Tisserand (born in Nuits) and the biggest moon's crater is named “Saint Georges”.
