The Abbey of Cîteaux The Abbey of Cîteaux

The Abbey of Cîteaux was founded in march 1098 by Robert of Molesmes who wanted to return to the strict precepts created by St-Benoît. At first living in « La Petite Forgeotte », Robert and the monks who had followed him, were moved after in a place discovered 100 meters next to the first one. Named « Citeaux » because of the “cistels”, the oldest name of rushes and reeds of marshes, the new monastery began a long time ascension that knew few hurts. Saint-Bernard gave it a considerable expansion: the Abbey became Order Chief and had lot of reproductions. The monks impact on the region was important : the Clos de Vougeot castle and its vineyards, the Gilly castle, lot of barns, the villages of St-Nicolas and St-Bernard, clearings, ponds and ingenious canals to provide the Abbey with water.

Still today, the monks make cheeses that they suggest to taste all over the year.

The visit of the site shows the old buildings, the library (XVIh century), and the noviciate (XVIIth century).

An active monastic community lives at the Abbey. Guided visits for individuals and groups of up to 25 persons are offered. Advance booking is recommended.
