A short history...

The name of Villars-Fontaine comes from a gallo-roman property a "villa", which must be in Meuilley. Villars means "away from the house". The second part of the name comes from the 30 springs and fountains just above the ground.

Thanks to the land of the valley of Meuzin and to dense forest, life develops from the 1st century A.C.

First vineyard had probably been developed about year 1000. In 1830, wine of Villars-Fontaine was the most expensive of the region.

In the 19th century, a quarry of stone of Comblanchien was opened. It is still in activity.

As Vougeot, Villars-Fontaine hasn’t got any church.
